Canine and Equine Therapy for Mental Health

Last, Casady (2007) briefly described single subject research, explaining the basic procedure, terminology, and how to use something called “single subject group designs.” She did not mention the traditional within-subjects designs of reversal, multiple baseline, or alternating treatments, nor did she present any quantifiable data from any single-subject design testing the effectiveness of hippotherapy. Horses have distinct personalities, moods, and attitudes. Girls who have eating or sleeping disorder. Some specific client challenges include: behavioral issues, Attention Deficit Disorder, anger management, conflict resolution, relationship problems, couples therapy, depression, anxiety, stress, substance abuse, eating disorders, at-risk youth, victims of abuse, those in bereavement, those lacking self-esteem, veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, people who are unresponsive to traditional therapies, and people with other mental health challenges.

However, our review revealed that significant gaps in knowledge remain and must be addressed to facilitate the identification of interventions most worthy of widespread implementation among veterans. The clients must work to get the horse over their “life obstacle.” However, the client cannot lead the horse over the obstacle. This can lead to phobias, mental distress, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The horse-human dynamics explored in therapy can translate to everyday interpersonal interactions. What is equine therapy?

The whole body vibration system has immense benefits. Vibration technology utilizes vibration to induce the body’s natural response. Play therapy: For children who have not yet learnt how to express their feelings in words, play therapy, which involves toys and other creative props, helps in eliciting a natural response to the trauma in them. Research suggests that approximately 50% of substance abusers have concomitant mental health issues, of some degree of severity. Another article by Casady (2004a) was not a research study testing hippotherapy in a controlled way; instead, she described the use of case studies when testing the effectiveness of hippotherapy.

However, she did mention that the journal AHA Hippotherapy has published studies using single subject designs over the past two years. Notwithstanding the increasing scientific interest on EAIs, few studies have tested the stress experienced by horses involved in these interventions. Well, here you can have anything from equine therapy, play therapy, diet, neurofeedback, chiropractic, pet therapy, meditation, yoga and a whole host of others.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy, which encourages individuals to switch out adverse pattern actions with positive ones. Since most therapists are not trained in this type of therapy, it could be difficult for you to find a qualified therapist. The children learn communication by responding to the verbal prompts of the therapists and also give the horse direction. Our equestrian facility is located in Collierville TN on 35 beautiful acres in the heart of Memphis horse country.

Beth Allen, owner of Lazy Acres Farm, far right, observes students Abby Cozart, far left, and Heather Baker during a class exercise with one of the miniature horses and provides feedback. Counseling provides parents with the tools they need to address behavior problems positively and consistently. According to its Web site, the horse is used because of the “multidimensional movement” of this animal, which provides “sensory input through movement which is variable, rhythmic, and repetitive.” The movement of the horse then requires reactions on the part of the rider that mimic movements of the pelvis while walking.

Working with horses also allows youth to engage in higher-order cognitive processes, including problem solving, following multi-step directions, maintaining focus, prioritizing tasks to achieve goals, and inhibiting impulsive reactions. Why are horses used. Equine therapy programs are facilitated by licensed therapists who are also experienced, certified equine specialists. Our team of certified coaches and equine specialists provide programs designed to work with your team to improve effective communication, cohesiveness, productivity, problem resolution and integration. How do I try out for the riding team?

We also sold out the event, had record attendance and made more money than ever before! Acute trauma is from one single event, where chronic trauma is a result of repeated and prolonged abuse. EFT-CT is a trauma-informed model, designed to incorporate core components of intervention that target areas impacted by exposure to trauma. Trot On is a therapeutic program utilizing EFT-CT (Equine Therapy for Complex Trauma) to promote each individual’s strengths and resilience. Equine assisted therapies differ from therapeutic riding in that the therapy setting is conducted on the ground rather than in the saddle, and the horse is part of a three-pronged therapy team (mental health specialist, equine specialist, and the horse).

One of the most important aspects of your counseling experience is the relationship that you will form with your treatment team. A team of Hazelden clinicians convened to shape the program; it included Moore, Murauskas, Paul Mladnick, Sue Hoisington, Mark Sheets, Bruce Larson, Patti Hall, Fran Williams, Candice Walker, Neva Sherman, Kerry Crain, Kelley Harrison, Jody Mutzenburger, Al Bradley, Cheryl Buechner and Dave Kulsrud. It’s like looking in a mirror as it shows you the parts that need to change.

It’s the perfect stage for building friendships. Equine therapy supports youth in building competency, mastery, felt-safety, and developing a cohesive sense of self through direct experiences. Equine therapy also increases the person’s confidence, self-esteem, and self-respect. As such, EAP or EFP may provide that extra meaning and sense of purpose in a person’s life. Safety for people working in EFP. People who may have physical limitations and can’t participate in other recreational activities find riding to be an enjoyable way to spend time.

Smith (2009) noted that only registered occupational, physical, and speech therapists incorporate horses into treatment, using the horse as a sensory “input,” much like other sensory objects and activities. There’s something special about the moment a 2,800-pound draft horse connects with you that requires you to be completely yourself. They also fear the horse could hurt them or emotionally. As they learn new nonverbal communication skills and how to treat the horse, they often realize that there was nothing to fear in the first place. Like our Facebook page!
